Video: State of Sound Sessions: Jasmyn Milan and Gudiya

State of Sound Sessions is a new series produced by NC State University Libraries that features recorded live performances of a diverse array of artists, captured by the Make Media team. Captured live in distanced settings and broadcast on the NC State University Libraries Twitch channel, State of Sound Sessions gives you the chance to see artists up close and engage with them in the live chat that happens during the broadcasts. State of Sound Sessions are virtual, free, and open to the public.

This week we bring you performances from Durham, NC's Jasmyn Milan and Raleigh, NC's Gudiya.

Jasmyn Milan is a multidisciplinary experimental artist from Wilmington, DE  currently based in Durham, NC. Her music and art are a vibrant mix of technicolor, grunge, rage & femme power. Jasmyn Milan is fusing her art with music to create a hyper-animated world of her own. Also known as TRAILORTRASH, Jasmyn Milan is an underground art and club queen. Her debut album IMMORTAL was released December 13th, 2019. Her work has been featured in Duke Rubensteins art center, the Carrack Art Gallery, Durham Fruit & Produce Co., Ideal Glass Studios, and more. She has been published in the Clarion Content, Wotisart magazine, A5 magazine, as well as local zines and publications. She has been featured as a DJ, curator, and performer at Hopscotch Festival, Moogfest, RuPauls Dragcon, and Durham Pride. Jasmyn is always taking a futuristic approach to new projects and traveling opportunities, and hopes to curate and pursue her talents on a large scale internationally.

Gudiya is the alter ego of Hema Gaia, a Raleigh based visual designer, experimental musician, consultant, and DJ. Gaia yields her lack of knowledge in traditional art and music production as a powerful sword, finding beauty in happy accidents and discovering pleasantries in unsuspecting locations. For her live performances, she pays equal attention to both audio and visual elements of the set, utilizing found footage, personal recordings, and glittery gifs to enhance the auditory experience. Gaia's art aims to disrupt the anticipated and assumed experiences of Indian Americans, adding a lighthearted twist to the often sad diaspora narrative. Through her consultation work with both youth and adults, she breaks down colonial and patriarchal barriers to music and art, and aids people in accessing their inherent talents. Gaia also produces music in Sand Pact with collaborator Alex Fresa.

This session contains mature lyrical content and is suggested for adult viewing and listening.
